my saying.. I completely switched to the apple mac after I have had the time to have a look at Windows Vista.
My macbook is great and os 10.5 will be clearly ways above vista in most of the relevant criterias..

I disagree. My Mac was not particularly useful to me.

I've been keeping up with the Betas (and I have a RTM copy of Vista sitting on my desk waiting for a machine to install it on) and I agree that it's gotten better. Certainly a lot has changed - I'm overjoyed by the inclusion of .NET 3.0 (though not overjoyed by the name). However, I've also bought a Mac Mini in the same time and I have to say, it really blows me away.

I am planning on looking at this post again when I've had time to run Vista and Tiger side by side for a while, but so far my experiences up to the last beta lead me to believe that Vista is still a confused mess. It's not just having features, it's implementing them elegantly and accessibly that's important. Aero, for example, doesn't even start to do anything cool with DWM. Flip 3D and "glass" don't cut it.

I'd strongly suggest looking again at the OS. When you wrote this the latest version was Beta 1. It's a whole new OS since then with the UAC prompts tidied up so there's a lot less, the performace has improved dramatically and the functionality you're harping on about is there - it's just been renamed.

Virtual folders are essentially shortcuts that are created on the fly in the UI. Guess what - they're there. Development API's? Try the .Net 3.0 Framework that's INCLUDED with Vista. OK, no new WinFS but the indexing functionality is awesome and how can you fail to miss out on the 500+ group policies, or the rewritten IP stacks? Maybe you failed to notice BitLocker or ReadySpeed. Prehaps the IE7+ protected mode slipped your brief play with what is now a 6 month out of date beta?

Things like Aero aren't the glass effect. Aero is the rendering engine built into the OS and MS are trying to show off what it's capable of. The glass theme is optional and can be turned off, but it's the capablilties of what developers can do with the new rendering engine that's so cool. If it wrote the API's and engine that the UI uses I'd go to town on fancy bubbles and glass effects!

I suggest you do another review to show off the final product!
